Took a little drive to the town of Lincoln today. Almost all the buildings are designated historic. Kids, your great grandad Bud would have loved this place. He loved the old west and was always reading a western novel.
We started our tour at the museum where they reviewed the history of the region. The Murphy and Dolan store was built to supply the Apaches and the troops at Fort Stanton a few miles away. They ripped off everyone and cheated the farmers so when Tunstall started up a rival store he seriously cut into Murphy's business and they started a fued. It ended when one of Murphy's men shot Tunstall. Billy the Kid was a friend of Tunstall's and he swore to revenge Tunstalls killing. When he shot Tunstall's killer it sparked the Lincoln County War. You can follow the links for more details.
The Murphy Dolan store has a lot of old pictures and artifacts and was very interesting to walk through. The top floor had a courtroom and surprisingly a Mason's temple. The Forest Ranger in there was born in Lincoln of Apache and Mexican parents. He told us how much the town had changed since he was a boy. It is just a museum town today but was quite thriving back when he was younger.
The next stop on the trip was a brief one at what used to be Fort Stanton. It was turned into a santorium for TB patients and has served as some kind of a hospital.
Next we stopped at the Smokey the Bear roadside display and got a picture of Smokey, Granny and Sadie.
The next 4 pictures are at the O Bar O Ranch where we looked at 140 acre properties. The one we liked was number 8 and it went right up the hill into the trees and stopped at the Lincoln National Forest. This is a beautiful Valley and they even have a golf course. We liked it so much we bought the property for only $300k. April fool!
Got a picture of a couple of antelope on the property as well. Too bad I didn't have a higher powered lense handy.

Hey Fred, I played a round of golf for the first time this winter. The round cost me $9 including cart. It is a regular size course with some very long holes I guess because it is at 5400 feet elevation. I was only 2 over for the round. I played a best ball with Me, Myself and I. I have no idea how much further the ball flies at this altitude because the wind was howling about 25mph or more. I got one par by Myself kissing off a short putt by I. I invoked the pre 1900 R&A rule for this one.
The 9th hole is a 477 yard par 4 and it played directly into the wind. Myself hit a good drive and then I hit a good 3wood and was still 110 yards out. Me smashed a 7 iron straight into the teeth of the wind to within 15 feet. Second bogie.
Not many calm days on the high desert this time of year so I may not get any more opportunities to play down here.
Looking forward to getting home and playing in the Derelict Tournament.

Got to Mary's in Moriarty, NM today. Then visited for few days until the pups arrived. The mom is Harbourview Echo (Bristle great grand daughter) and the dad is JRRanch Cooper. Mom and pups are doing great and they are all getting fat tummies as you can see from the pictures taken only a few hours after their birth.

Kate and Judi are having a great time, getting lots of exercise spending all day outside with Mary's dogs. Very windy here most of the time but temps have been in the 60's so it is perfect for them.

Tomorrow, April 10, we will move on to Amarillo, Tx for a couple of days and then start the long trek home. We hope to be home by April 16. This should be plenty of time to get a few days rest before the Sue's girl, Wootinhill Tess has her pups.

Drove a little down the road to a very nice RV Resort and thought we would just veg out for a couple of days and celebrate our anniversary. The owner of the resort convinced us we had to take the 1/2 hour drive to Palo Duro Canyon and today we did.
What a piece of luck! We had no idea such a beautiful site was just over the horizon of this flat prairie land. Palo Duro Canyon (click on this link also) is the second largest canyon in the US, right after Grand Canyon. The difference is that you can drive down into this canyon to camp, explore, ride horses or see an amazing show at sunset.
It was a very windy, cold rainy day but great for driving in Palo Duro Canyon.
Weather permitting we will go back for a horseback tour in the canyon tomorrow.
If that happens will update here with more pictures.
